Yes!!

Goal Achieved!

I have reached and surpassed my $500 goal and am at $576 raised for PAWS Chicago! Huge thanks to Don, Shaun, and Nicole for the donations that put me past the mark!

I am starting to hit some serious weekly milage in training. My long runs are up to 20mi. and in August, there's no escape from the heat. I toss on that PAWS singlet and hit the Mile High City though and your support is quite a motivator!

I'm hoping a few of you are still interested in donating though. 100% of your donations go to help this no-kill shelter and quite literally you dollars are saving lives. "Since PAWS Chicago’s founding, the number of homeless pets killed annually in Chicago has fallen nearly 70% — from more than 42,000 pets killed in 1997 to less than 14,000 in 2013.  By continuing these efforts, Chicago should be a No Kill community in the next five years."

If you can spare a few bucks to help this organization out, it is certainly appreciated! Spreading the word is also incredibly helpful.

Team PAWS Update

Only 1 for $20 to goal!

I am quite excited to report I am within $20 of hitting my goal of $500 for PAWS Chicago! For those of you who don't know, I will be running the Chicago Marathon in October on behalf of PAWS Chicago. This is a no-kill shelter that has drastically reduced the euthanized strays in the Windy City and have created a working demonstration how the is possible elsewhere! They also happen to be the first organization I ever ran a race for and am tickled to run my 10th marathon for them!

These are some great people doing wonderful work. Hit the link below to learn more as a status update is not enough room to say it all. I appreciate your support, be it donations or helping spread the word! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Grazed but Unscathed

If you live in any kind urban area, there are some harsh feelings between bikes and cars on the roads. I understand both have issues, some valid and some exaggerated. I bike more often than drive and honestly have as many complaints about both groups. All too often I see bikes just being obnoxious and wreck less. At the same time, motorists that decide the laws don't apply are equally vexing and potentially very much more dangerous. The driver that decides my bike is the place he wants to demonstrate his frustration for share the road is even scarier. I am trying to do my partand be a obedient cyclist and not respond in kind, but when a KIA decides to graze you (especially in high speed towards a red light 50 yards ahead), it's tough to turn the other cheek. None the less, I will keep riding and try and be the good example. When faced with hostility, I will attempt to respond with decorum and keep myself out of harm's way. No one deserves to be made afraid and I will continue to ride. After all, we are all just trying to get somewhere.

Musings From the Long Run

I just returned home after a 16 mi. run. To beat the heat I was out the door well befor 6am and enjoyed a cooler morning here in Denver for a change. The run itself was smooth and relatively easy. Part of me wonders if last week's relay race at high elevation helped some.

What I really like about these long runs is the peace and freedoms to let the mind wander. I often equate the long run to a road trip for my non-running friends. You are more likely to ease into the journey when the destination isn't all that close. When I am about to run for over 2 hours, it becomes necessary for me to not focus on the end so much as the next mile or segment of my run. I have a wonderful route through Denver that let's me see some of the best parks and neighborhoods as well as a few of the struggling ones. Together it makes me that much more appreciative of where I am.

I was also charged a bit today from the experience of spending so much time with some pretty impressive athletes last week. Our relay race was 191 miles from Canyon City to Crested Butte. We finished in 27:30 in second place. Having never run a relay together or that race, we considered that pretty damn good. The biggest boost to me was being surrounded by people that run like I run, which is to say pretty far and pretty often. In my van (of the 2 on our team) we had marathoners, Ironman finishers, Ultra-marathoners, and short distance winners. For a change, my running several marathons made me fit right in and we could talk about things other people don't ever deal with. For example, everyone in that van understood the tremendous hunger that you live with when you are constantly running. We all knew what it's like to sit down to a meal and already be thinking about the next one. That understanding was new to me.

All said, it was a great run today. I love that I can do this and that I have had a chance to meet others that get it.

9 for $20

Still looking for 9 for $20...

My goal is to raise $500 for PAWS Chicago. This amazing no-kill shelter has transformed the way homeless cats and dogs are handled in not just Chicago, but across the country. When PAWS Chicago was founded in 1997, more than 800 homeless cats and dogs were being killed in Chicago every week, totaling a staggering 42,561 deaths that year alone. By 2010, that number had been lowered to 17,399! These folks are doing amazing work and I am truly glad to help out by running on their behalf.

Please donate if you can or just help me spread the word! Every little bit helps, trust me.

Thank you!

Be Nice Jerk!

I've been struggling with getting distracted by negativity lately. This is a bit of a newer turn for me, not being positive, but the feeling dragged down by others. I used to actually be pretty content just knocking everything. It wasn't that hard, you just mocked everything and felt kinda ok doing it. A good friend put the kabosh on that when he posed to me that tolerance meant listening to opinions that I did not agree with. That also struck me as part of that 1st amendment I had so liberally used as an excuse for speaking out against anyone and everything. That is not the point here though. What I have made habit of has been trying to be more positive and just doing right as it's the right thing to do. It doesn't matter if it's noticed or not, that's truly not the point. What has been getting my attention has been just how many people lately that I've noticed just being mean or worse aloof. I don't want to notice this so much, but lately I have. I wanted to just throw that out there and get it off my chest. Staying focused on my shit though keeps me less stressed.

20 for $20

20 for $20 PAWS Campaign!

I am aiming to raise $500 for PAWS Chicago and will be running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in October for them. What I am looking for are 20 people to donate $20 to reach my goal. PAWS Chicago is a no-kill shelter that has drastically changed the way homeless pets are taken care of and has become an model for several other cities to follow. Chicago was my home for several years and PAWS was the first organization I ran a race for. I am looking forward to trying to help them out again this year and run the streets of the Windy City for them. Help out if you are able and help me knock out my goal with $20!

I am thrilled to get the chance to race for them again! If you are able to donate to this amazing, no-kill shelter it would be very appreciated! I will roll out more information on this great group as well as progress towards my $500 goal.

Today in My Life

There are days when I just figure, "why not?" Today was one. I got up at 5am and punched out a quick 6mi. run just in time to hop on the bike and head to November Project. We were asked to ride today to celebrate Bike to Work Day here in Denver and our workout was at one of the biggest talley points in Civic Park. The workout was tough with plenty of suicides on tired legs. So worth it. Snagged some free breakfast and a little swag and headed home for a quick shower before work. My day was filled with tasks and felt good when it was quitting time. Washed the dogs, brushed their teeth and did the dishes before grabbing a vegan treat from City O City. Now I'm out again to participate in Buke Night with the Denver Cruisers. It's been a fun a tough day and I feel great! I so often hear friends bemoan their age and I can't help but feel pretty stoked about mine. This is a pretty damn good life and I am grateful to not only be able to do all this but have a hell of a lot of fun too.

Rest, the new old idea.

Until just a day before the marathon last week, I had bolstered a running streak of 136 days straight. It was one of those things that began perpetuating itself. There were days I did not want to run but felt liable to my streak. A friend recently observed that I rarely do anything lightly. While I avoided injury and bounced back from the marathon within days, I have resisted the urge to lace up. Instead I've been resting with just a couple workouts for November Project. It's been good but tough. In a way it felt like because I could, I should.

I am taking two weeks without running. It will give me an easy week before training begins for Chicago. I am also going to tweak my plan. As per usual, it will be tougher, but I am putting rest days back in. I want to push harder and thus will be taking the universally recommended rest days seriously. The last four months, rest days meant only a mile or two.

Can and should, the endless battle for me. I aim to enjoy every minute of Chicago in October, but I also intend to leave it all on the streets of my old home town. Taking a couple days off each week will make me faster, stronger, and most importantly healthier.

Another chapter in the story.

It's been a while since updating Stupie. The Colfax marathon has been run and run faster than I've run any marathon before. Beagle Freedom Project has received over $800 from my fund raising and I am quite grateful for the help my friends, family and even strangers offered. I am about to celebrate my first year working at my job. While my position did not exists prior to coming in board, it feels like I have made a good impact. The days are not long enough most days and payday comes without anticipation. The later is amazing having endured under or erratic employment most of my adulthood. I am looking toward the summer with excitement at what can be done. I've signed up to try a few new races including a 200mi. relay and a Muckfest. I will be training to run Chicago's marathon this fall and am feeling motivated to train hard. I will once again be on Team PAWS and excited to return to them to run a race in their city. I will be mixing in the great workouts with November Project, which has not only provided great cross training, but is building a community I am proud to be a part of. They have a positivity I can not get enough of while being focused on pushing me physically.

There's a lot to take in and writing Stupie went back burner. I just felt like I wasn't saying anything all that interesting. While accounting my life is not riveting, I am sure, I enjoy getting the thoughts out. With many influences out trying to pursued, mine is just a story. That's it.

Running 4 Beagle Freedom Project Update

It has been a little over a week and I am proud and grateful to report that I am at $329.18 raised thus far! I have a generous donor in the wings as well that will be making a donation soon and can not tell you how grateful I am for the support you all are showing this great cause!

Beagle Freedom Project has done some amazing work in their relatively short time. The biggest impact is the awareness they are offering. Prior to becoming involved with BFP, I did not know that beagles were the breed of choice for labs because of their inherent gentle nature as well as being one of the most forgiving breeds. These folks are working hard to let some of the gentle, brave dogs have a life after the labs. This option formerly was not even an option, EVER.

I am proud to be running for them and trying to raise some money to help them. Mostly though, I am happy to get the word out about these great folks. As always, I appreciate you donations but I also truly appreciate your help in sharing the word about them!

I'll be thinking of you all tomorrow on my 20mi. training run!

Boston Strong

I know it may sound a little ridiculous, but there are still many times when I think of myself as a runner and kinda laugh. To me it still seems a stretch to claim that name despite the fact that I have now run 8 marathons, log miles daily, and am actively running for charities. I burn out running shoes faster than I have ever gone through shoes in my life and know the flavors of GU that are palatable. I have learned a lot in the few years I have been doing this now.  I still more often run alone and rarely get involved with more than one runner unless it is a race.

None the less, I belong now to a community. I am a runner. I am a marathoner. Hell, I even qualified for the Marathon Maniacs last year by running two 26.2 mile races in two weeks. I don't know a lot of marathoners, but at the same time, I kinda know them all to a degree.

A year ago, bombs exploded at the finish of one of the most revered marathons in the world. The attack had nothing to do with the the Boston Marathon, it was just a crowded place. They went off when the mid-packers were just getting to the finish line. The runners were not even the ones targeted, but the amazing people that came out to cheer for them while they finished something remarkable. To run 26.2 miles is a tremendous feat, but to support someone doing so, whether that's holding a sign or a Gatorade cup, is one of the greatest gifts any runner can get. The attacks hit them hardest.

While I know the marathoners were not the cause of the attack, my community suffered the brunt of it. Over the months, Boston Strong became a creed of resilience and the city stood up and began putting itself back together. Runners lined up and ran marathons across the world, at times with daunting security. I doubt it is harder to meet the president than it was for me to get to the starting line of the New York Marathon last year.

Today, I remember the events a year ago and hold deep gratitude for the heroes, the first responders, and the last to go home from the ER's. So much good came forth, it is hard not to be overwhelmed. I hung the flag on our porch this morning and threw on a running shirt for the day. I am grateful for my community and all those that stepped up over the last year to help it. Today, Boston Strong means so much and it will mean even more on Patriot's Day next Monday when the Boston Marathon returns.

Thank you Boston. The marathon was attacked and there was nothing you could do about that. Being strong was a choice. We needed it more than you can know.

What BFP Does

This is the group I am running for, Beagle Freedom Project. After spending their entire lives in labs, BFP has been able to save some of these dogs from being destroyed and given them a chance to live out the remainder of their lives like normal dogs.

The link to my fund raising page is: https://www.justgive.org/running4BeagleFreedomProject

They have never had someone run a marathon for them before and I hope to bring in a few dollars to help their work, but most importantly I want to let more people know about what they do.

Running to Benefit BFP

I have set up an account through Just Give to fundraise for the upcoming Colfax Marathon in May. I am running to benefit Beagle Freedom Project! The do incredible work and I am the first runner doing a marathon on their behalf. Anything helps, whether it is financial or just spreading the word. I am deeply grateful for your help!

Next Marathon Charity

My next marathon here in Denver is only a couple months off and it has been a new challenge to get my charity lined up. I am interested in running for Beagle Freedom Project, an organization that helps provide dogs tested in labs a life after testing. They are a small, grassroots organization that foes some remarkable work. I didn't know prior to learning about them that beagles are the most common dog used due to their forgiving nature or that after they served their time as test dogs they were destroyed rather than given a chance to live a life like a normal dog of they were capable.

After running for PAWS last fall, I truly wanted to dedicate my affinity to running to do some good as well. The tough part is that BFP is small enough that they don't have a program for charity running. After many emails, a work around solution has been found and I just need to set up an external fund raiser page. That's my goal today. I have no amount I need to raise this time, but know any amount I can bring in will help them, especially as I will not be costing them anything.

Stay tuned for more info or go to the Beagle Freedom a Project website to see more on the organization I am looking to help. They are not a shock organization with horrifying images but one that really focuses on the good they seek to do.

Home Again

Recently my wife and I were able to get back to Chicago for a visit. It was but for a few days but it was a wonderful trip. Chicago had been our home for several years and when a place truly becomes home there is a sentiment there that will never leave you. I've also heard it said when a large city becomes home it has a unique place in your heart. That is certainly the case for the Windy City for us.  We love living in Denver now and it was truly good to be home. Being a tourist is tough work.

Good Moment

It's been one of those days where my best planning could not predict the true events of the day. None the less everything that needed doing got done and I just got to bike to my favorite coffee shop to meet some friends. Honestly, as simple as that is, it made my day.

Cruelty Free to Peace of Mind

My wife has found a passion for animals in recent years. From rescues to using anti-cruelty products, she has become a true activist. She even goes to the capital to help lobby for reform. I've long believed the best recruiting tool is example and I am proud of hers. It has changed our daily lives by giving up products that test on animals and we have become full time vegetarians (part time vegans). While none of these steps were easy, we feel good about the direction we are taking. I have a peace of mind in my consumption and consumerism that is hard to imagine giving up. I am less vocal than my wonderful wife, but I try and do what I can. I run for charities now in my marathons and demonstrate that not eating meat has not hindered my performance as an endurance runner. If anything , I have improved drastically since giving up meat. Last year I shaved 12 min off my marathon time and completed 3, with 2 being just a couple weeks apart. I have not been injured nor have I been sick in over a year. That's me though. I am happy if Tiff and I help make a difference but also hope we can serve as a positive example.

Push or Stop

I am in my ninth week of training for the Colfax Marathon. This is roughly midway and it feels like it. My cross training has helped keep the running more exciting and I have not hit the point of tired on my long runs as I have in the past. Mixing it up some seems to be having some perks. That said I am still adding milage wherever I can with this loose belief that higher milage will make stronger legs between miles 20 and 26. I am curious if I pushing through rest periods I should be heeding. It's hard to say. I have run everyday for weeks now and am not fatiguing and there are very few pains that last longer than a day. It's a tough call. I know resting will help but pushing is helping too.

The joys of self training.

Pippin Adopted

It would seem our little foster, Pippin has an adopter on their way to our place. This is the hardest part. We know she is coming up and he is about to go to a new home, but it does not make it any easier. We are so glad to have helped this little guy. He's had a rough go and I hope this is his last stop. Thanks for the smiles Pippin!

Thresholds

November Project Denver −02.26.14 (suicides in the park)
Perhaps it's a Spring thing, but I have dedicated myself to pushing hard in my training plan. I have up'd the mileage some but am also cross training with November Project on Wednesday's. All those that recommended plyometrics can rest assured, they are very much a part of the week now as are a few two-a-days. Add in a level 2 yoga class once a week and I feel sawed in half most of the week. I know I am pushing harder as I look forward to whatever long run I have on Sat just for the ease of a long, slow run. I keep thinking that the training of last year should make some of this easier, but that I suppose is the point of pushing harder. I am biking all the time now as well and purposely take hills as often as is possible. Yesterdays bike accident had me feeling  much more sore than usual and today I wasn't sure if I'd be able to do much on my tempo run. I pulled of my two fastest miles this year. It is fun to push harder and try for more. When I do find out what is enough, I hope to have had a long, exciting road getting there.

Pushing harder is fun. Doing it again is great. Atrophy is terrifying. Today I can.

Humility is Just a Thin Patch of Ice Away

Today began pretty well. Despite some soreness from yesterday's November Project, my easy mile went smooth. The weather had improved and this morning was all but spring like. I had no inhibitions at all about hopping on the bike to ride off to work, even with a heavier than usual bag. One thin film of ice on the slope coming out of my building's parking lot sent me to the ground quick. After dusting myself off and getting the chain hooked back up I headed out to work. The chain suffered some stress somewhere from the fall and snapped off a block from work.

It hurt hitting the ground and I hate waiting till I get home to inspect the damage closer, but all things considered, it wasn't too bad a wipe out. I'm a bit more sore than I was prior to tensing up like that, but it could have easily been worse. As a guy that will ride till it hits zero in the winter, I know there are chances of wipe out. What it did was slap me with some humility in a quick way. As I said, I'll ride in almost anything (run too), and sometimes that makes me a little cocky. I am very cautious on the roads as I trust no one, but my mindset probably needed to come down a notch or two.

With luck, all will be fixed in time to ride tonight. Those are accidents that are not quite so bad.

Workin'

There seems to be quite a bit filling the days these days and I am beat every night when I go to bed an hour later than intended. What I don't get is what is taking so much damn time? There is a considerable amount of work happening right now at Dwell and my training program is even more ambitious than last Spring, but I just don't know why time is so short. I also don't see a ton of "finished" items either. There is the occasional remodeled bathroom vanity or completing a 14 miler, but on the whole many of my tasks seem to be maintenance work. It's good to be busy, I just wish I knew where all the time seemed to be going.

The picture is just Maggie being cute…

Pippin

We have a new foster dog, Pippin. He's a Chihuahua and far and away the smallest dog we have fostered. Pippin comes from a puppy mill with some serious trauma in his short past. While Chihuahua's usually strike me as pretty meek, this guy is all sorts of timid. We picked him up on Sat and it has been gratifying to see some progress already. Very slowly, he's coming out of his shell a bit and we are encouraging him to just be a dog. A 4.5 lb. dog, but a dog none the less. While I'd rather run for the organizations or donate in some other way, these fostering gigs have provided me with some pretty cool insights on helping out in a very personal way.

I don't know how long we will have Pippin before his forever home finds him, but it feels good to give this guy a chance to be what he is, a dog. Hell, every breathing creature deserves that.

One of Those Days

It's been one of those great days. It started with clear skies and a wonderful 14mi run through Denver. My extra cross training seems to be paying off as I am not even feeling fatigue on these early long runs. We brought home a new foster dog and he's getting settled. I ripped out part of our bathroom and successfully reinstalled a new vanity. No plumbing disasters. Now I'm walking to VooDoo Doughnuts in a nice snowstorm. It feels so good to have stretched the legs some to come over here. It has been one of those full, great days.

Running Check-In

I am now in my 7th week of training for the Colfax Marathon this May. Thus far I have been mixing it up some with some two-a-day's and working in a few November Project workouts. My legs feel good and I am starting to feel form and speed returning. I am also interested in running for a charity once again. The one I would like to run for is called Beagle Freedom Project. They do incredible work but as a small grassroots group, they do not have an established runner for charity program. I am awaiting word on its development, but will figure out some way to raise some money for these folks. It feels good to be running strong and for a good cause again.

We now return...

It's been a month and I am glad to have stepped away for a bit. Training began for my next marathon, work got pretty busy, and most importantly the creative juices were allowed to replenish some. As the year has developed, it's been good to see some strong energy accompanying it. It's exciting and I am pretty jazzed for some upcoming tasks, trips, and over-all goals. Hello 2014. It took a few weeks to get a handle on things, but I'm happy to say you are turning out to be a bit of alright.

Pause for Thought

A wise man once told me it is insane to talk to someone about not talking to each other. None the less, that is what I am proposing here. After a dedicated year of daily blogs, I found myself riding the inertia into 2014. That was about the only thing I saw happening on my daily posts. I felt the well had gone dry in that way that good material was not surfacing with consistent effort. I have no illusions that my life is not so interesting that I can just relay what I ate and have it become riveting reading material.

Ergo, it was time to stop for a bit. On the outside chance you pursued this blog regularly and wondered whaaaa happened, that's it. Nothing drastic, just my desire to not be boring.

I have proven repeatedly though to myself that I can not avoid writing for long and am confidant I'll be posting again soon, but for now Stupie is taking brief break.

Working working...

It's been one of those fast moving weeks where everything is feeling blurry. I dig it when it's like this. Working fast, thinking fast, and getting things done. I actually love it like this. It was my favorite part of the food service industry. The faster and better you worked, the more you made. These days, I am self motivated but am in no shortage of push. I'll enjoy extra sleep at some point, but if it's not today I know that means I'm getting to do more.

Brothers of Old

Happy throwback Thursday!

Shift Up

All of a sudden I find myself in the midst of a busy stretch with work and freelance gig's. Additionally there are some big commitments coming up and my next training plan is on the verge of kicking in. It's all very exciting, but there's a degree of whiplash from such a quiet holiday week. I am enjoying it though. Two things I truly disdain are being idle and bored. Here's to kicking it in a higher gear!

Figure it out

There's a few things that I fear will forever baffle me. One is how I have an uncanny knack for going to airport security or a post office right after someone who has never done this before. The systems are not new nod or they fast and yet every time there seems to be someone at the front of the line that was caught unaware they were next.

Date Night

Tonight was date night and although my date is still on the mend, I went out to do a little of what we do. My first yoga class was awfully tough, but it felt good to get back to a routine and my wayward date was so happy to get the City O City we usually enjoy after together. It's just one of those things that feels good and familiar. I love it when they work out to be the same.

Winter Makes You Stronger

I love winter! I do! The cold barely bothers me and when it is colder than I can stand, I have the perfect layers to negate it. It's easy to stay warm enough and there's an exhilaration to facing the chill. My wife showed me her phone that said the "feels like" temp this morning in Denver was −4 degrees. I immediately suited up and hit the roads for a 7 mile run. It was great, quiet and made me feel alive. I then threw on some good boots, my shorts and a heavy jacket and ran some errands. Winter is fantastic. I'll take this over heat anytime!

The Beard Experiment

After my race in New York, I sorta let my beard just go. It was November and the no-shave November was just enough excuse to pardon any wayward commentary till the month was over. By December my beard had reached a respectable length and I just opted to let it go a little longer, assuming my wife would soon request a shave before the holidays. No such request came and I went through the holidays in Ohio without being called a hippie even once. I hit the roads today for a morning run in the heavy snow fall and must admit I truly enjoyed the frost and ice in it. I don't really know how long I'll let it go, but it has been a fun little experiment.

Back to Work

With holidays midweek and the standard 1-2 punch of Christmas and New Years, it feels good seein a little normalicy returning in this shortened week. I am so happy to say I love my job and was excited to get back to it. This is a very new phenomenon to me as are holidays that are holidays. Whether it was paying dues or what, I'm glad for it. I also am glad to have a normal to go back to. I never would have guessed I'd like that do much. Goes to show, I don't often know what will suit me best.

New Year, Revived Ideas

The year of good is officially in the books and here we are on the first day of 2014. My resolutions this year are based in some of the same ideas from last year. Rather than resolving to quit doing something per se, I am looking to where I have drifted away from things I love to do. Over the next year I have 3 areas I plan on reinvesting and look forward to it.

That's part of the fun around New Years isn't it? The chance to roll out some changes?

Whatever it is you seek to add, subtract, or just reinvest this year, I hope it makes yur life that much more enjoyable. I truly do believe it can be that good.
